Our Reception Rooms

We are adding photos of our reception rooms of our Bed & Breakfast, to the website as we feel that they meet with our complete satisfaction. this does not mean that they are not nice rooms already, it just means that we are not ready to showcase them, maybe there is something that needs to be altered, or a light fitting changed that we are not happy with. Please remember; The Retreat @ Le Grand Bois is our home, and not a hotel.

Front Entrance Hall & Door
Front Entrance Hall & Door
When we first visited Le Grand Bois, we were both taken by the style of the Front Door & the natural light that shone through it, unfortunately there was no other lighting in the Entrance Hall at all. We also fell in love with the typically French staircase. Now following a complete renovation, re-lighting & restyling of the entrance hall, to bring the place sympathetically into the 21st century. The hand made metalwork of the front door has also been repainted in a stylish metallic greyish-black, & now looks really quite smart again.

The Lounge
The Lounge
The Lounge at Le Grand Bois, with it's enourmous carved fireplace, where we have a large log fire on the go almost every evening in the cooler months, is a very welcome sight after a bracing day of work in the gardens.
The Lounge is such a light airey room even in early Spring, with three large door / window areas.

The New Log Burner In The Lounge
The New Log Burner In The Lounge
When we came to Le Grand Bois we thought what a fantastic fire place we had in the lounge & it was certainly very grand. We have used it as an open fire for the past two winters & have burnt tons of wood each year, & about 90% of the heat generated from burning all that wood has gone straight up the chimeny, so time to go environmentally friendly & get a slow burning log burner.

The new 20kW slow burning log burner has now been installed at Le Grand Bois, the fire & flue have been successfully smoke tested & is now all ready to use for the coming Winter months.

"The Studio Window" Portrait Of A Nude Woman Original Webster Murray Water colour
Canadian Webster Murray Spent time in Paris in the 1920's & 1930's & painted this, his possibly most famous painting "The Studio Window" while here in France. I found this Original Webster Murray Watercolour in the UK, among various works in a very old art folder I purchased. It now has pride of place in our lounge between the two arched windows, here at Le Grand Bois. It was confirmed as an original by Sotherbys in London some 5 or 6 years ago. If you type the artists name, or the name of the picture into Google or another search engine you find out a little more about Webster Murray, his life & his work.

This Impressive looking Victorian Era Dininr Room wall cupboard is so tall it had been in the previous owners house for years without its top cornice or finalies, it stands the best part of 3 metres tall.

The marble on the top of the matching Buffet Cabinet was so dirty that appered to be dark red & brown with white streaks, after a thorogh, but sympathetic clean it turns out to be a light grey & red & pink, & now looks wonderful. We had to wash the dust & over a hundred years of grim off of them to reveal a fresh looking Mahogany colour, which is stunning now.

I think this is just the right place for my small colection of Antique Crystal Wine & Spirit Decanters, some of which are family pieces & others I've purchased over the years in England.

A Staircase So Typically French
When we arrived at Le Grand Bois the original glass shade from the top of the marble Roman vase that graces the newl post had gone, & had been replaced with something completely wrong & for good measure the whole thing had been badly painted in a white gloss. We thought that the original colours would have been Metalic Grey for the balastrading & Gold for the handrail. with a Flambeau glass shade for the Roman style marble vase.

New Library Area & Front Balcony
The new library area was created out of what was a toilette (a wash & brush-up -powder room). But why it was placed between the the balcony & the upper floor rear landing area is anybody's guess. So to create a useable space & to gain guest access to the balcony we removed the old wash hand basin etc, & then fitted a breakfront book shelves.

New Guest Facilities at Le Grand Bois
New Guest Facilities at Le Grand Bois
There was a groundfloor toilet at Le Grand Bois but not very nice & no other facilities for washing etc, so it was an useable area. Also we have made use of the space that was behind the foyer door, by removing it, to fit shelves into the space for brochures of local points of interest & tourist information. We've added an American Art-Glass lampshade, & have of course retained the toilet door !
